480 kWp rooftop solar array on a logistics hub
A self-consumption photovoltaic array across 6,000 m² of warehouse roof, with live load monitoring and provision for battery storage.
The problem
The client had high, remarkably steady consumption concentrated in daylight hours — the ideal profile for self-consumed solar. The roof, however, was profiled steel sheet laid in 2004, and nobody knew for certain how much extra load it could carry.
What we did
Before touching the electrical design we had the roof structure assessed, which led us to specify lighter modules and a low-profile mounting system across part of the pitches. That check is what made everything after it possible.
The array is split into three sections on separate inverters, so that a single fault cannot take the whole system down. We fitted monitoring that compares generation against consumption in real time, and left both the space and the containment for storage to be added later.
The outcome
Around 72% of what the array generates is consumed on site. The monitoring had a useful side effect: reading the data, the client spotted overnight loads they had not known about, and cut their bill further by dealing with those.
